I know that we always get a million of these first time use posts, and I worked very hard not to post yet another one, but I was just excited about what I learned about my body.
I learned that I wasn't bleeding nearly as much as I thought I was!
Which tells me that the tampons just weren't absorbing the way they are supposed to. When I'd use tampons, I'd fill a super one after like 4 hours!! Or less! I always had to wear a back-up pad because I knew I would leak.
Based on this information, I thought I bled a lot.
This isn't true. The tampons just weren't completely filling. It's like they were only filling the outter layer. And then they'd start to leak.
I wore the Orangecup for 4 hours before I could change it and it was halfway full. I could've gone a little longer. Oh how I love cups!
As so many women before me, I'm thrilled I learned about cups and decided to give them a try. I wish I'd known about them sooner. It was a little intimidating getting that intimate with my own body, but I'm glad I've done it. Cups are great and I intend to start spreading the word!

| First period success! |
[21 Dec 2009|03:12pm] |
I wanted to thank this community for helping me gather the courage to try menstrual cups and for giving me such invaluable information.
Based on my estimations of my body tallied against the information on the sizing chart, coupled with my own personal crusade to buy locally whenever possible, I bought a Diva Cup (size 2) from my local health food co-op.
And people, it was an unmitigated success!
By some stroke of luck, the Diva fit me well and I had no stem-poky-problems. There were a couple times when I couldn't get the cup to open, but a removal and re-insertion did the trick. The 7-fold works much better than the other folds I tried (C-fold and punch-down--I didn't feel like trying anything too fancy right off the bat). The only time I had any trouble with removal was the very first attempt on my pre-period dry run. And I think that was largely due to me trying to figure out how to maneuver my long-ish nails around the cup without injury.
In another stroke of luck, this was one of my Bad Periods, which I have a few times a year: near-debilitating cramps (which keep me awake at night), heavy flow, exhaustion, headaches, nausea...the whole nasty deal. But I think the cup was easier on my body--and it certainly kept me somewhat interested and entertained! So much better than feeling a little repulsed by the numbers of tampons I've added to landfills over the years. I did use a pantyliner every day (and I was grateful for that), but I would've done that with tampons, too. I don't imagine that habit will change, although I might move to washable pantyliners eventually.
Thank you so much, menstrual_cups LJ community! You all are the bomb. I could not (and would not) have done it without you.

| U.S. Lunette Shipment Update! |

It looks like it will be a few more days than expected for our Lunette's to be shipped! :( They're so close but so far away!
Hello everyone,
I know you are all patiently waiting for your Lunette order to arrive on your doorstep. I want to let you know where it is and when it will get to you. On Friday, I was informed that our first shipment of inventory had cleared customs. Consequently, I anticipated receiving the shipment and mailing products to customers today. If you received an email from the USPS stating your product is shipping on the 21st, it was automatically generated when I printed your postage.
However, when checking on the arrival time this morning, I was informed that the shipment is still in customs, this time waiting for an FDA signature. Given the time of year, they are just a bit busy. They now anticipate two or three more days before I receive the inventory. The moment the shipment arrives at my office, I will send it on to you.
Wanting to do things right, our first navigation through the government process has been much slower than we’d like! It is frustrating but the FDA process is a good thing that exists to ensure our well-being. Please know we are doing our best to get you your product as soon as possible! In the meantime, we wish you a happy, relaxing holiday season!
Thank you,
Caron Rohman Lunette U.S. Representative

| Possible availability of Lunette Selene in the US |

I haven't seen this posted here before, so in case anyone else wants to know, I emailed Lunette to ask about the possibility of getting the Selene as well as the regular (clear) Lunette in the US. (Why, yes, blue *is* my favorite color. Man, if I'd known cups came in other colors before I bought the Diva...) Anyway, this was the response I got:
Right now we only have FDA clearance to sell the clear cup in the US, but we are in the process of filing to sell the Selene as well. I estimate the time frame to be only a few months. When new things happen, we post it on our FaceBook page, Twitter and our website. You might want to keep your eye out since we will most definitely make an announcement when we can sell the Selene.
That sounds pretty promising, wouldn't you say?

| Inside Out Diva Cup Doesn't Like to Pop Open |
[17 Dec 2009|11:15pm] |
|
I am getting ready to start my second cycle with my Diva Cup. I had no leaks during my first cycle and loved it! However, it is just a tiny smidge too long, and the nub where the stem was before I cut it off is a bit irritating, even though I filed it well (my vagina goes a little to the left, so the nub rubs my right wall). By the last day of my cycle, I couldn't take the irritation any longer and turned it inside out. MUCH better, but it was my last day so my flow was light and wasn't concerned about leaking. In preparation for this cycle, wanting to use it inside out for my heavy days too, I have been practicing inserting it inside out, and it just doesn't want to pop open! The punch down fold worked well right side out, but not inside out. I have tried all of the folds, running it under cold water, letting it open before it is in all of the way....as many tips as I have been able to find in this great community. I have also been storing it inside out, hoping that it gets "used" to being this way. Does anyone have any tricks to getting the Diva to pop open inside out? I am thinking that the solution may be just to order a Lunette, but want to give my Diva Cup a fair chance for three months before I make the change. Thanks in advance for your help, I love this place!

| End of Cycle two |
[17 Dec 2009|10:07am] |
Things went SO much better this time around. I didn't spill blood everywhere, I didn't have a ton of pain with removal, and I only used one panty liner and one pad the whole time! I am so so SO very happy! Thank you guys SO much for the support! It's such an adventure when you set out as an adult to do something totally new, and it's nice to have people there to help you along the way! You guys ROCK!

| Anyone received Lunette in USA yet? |
[16 Dec 2009|11:13pm] |
Just wondering if any other USA cup users had received their Lunettes since the FDA approval? I placed an order via the Lunette.com website a couple weeks ago, right after the FDA approval announcement, and was just curious how long the shipping time was... or if they are even shipping yet. So, anyone have their brand new FDA approved Lunette yet?
UPDATE: shipping confirmed, see comment below!!

| Would anyone be interested? |
[16 Dec 2009|06:22pm] |
I was just wondering if all of us here on this community would be willing to to measure their flow each month for a couple of months. In reference to this post: http://community.livejournal.com/menstrual_cups/1999351.html#cutid1
I thought it would be interesting if we could state which cup we're using (no changing cups during this experiment so it's consistent), how much blood fills the cup when we go to empty it, and how much blood we accumulate over the course of you period. Measure this versus how much you bled/how many pads/tampons you used before you got your cup. Also give a little bit of backup info, for instance, I'm 8 weeks postpartum so I don't think I'll be getting my period for a while. I've had 3 children and I'm 27 and I have a mid-low cervix. (The canal is the length of my middle finger, my cervix is right at the end.)
Anyone interested in compiling some data? It might help people new to the cup experience have a better time finding a cup that works for them. Also, if you have better ideas for compiling the data, let me know!

CRAMPS! |
] |
So, I got my OrangeCup last week and immediately started wearing it. I usually have spotting for a few days before my period kicks in to gear, so I used the small as practice runs and to catch the spotting.
I did ok. Getting it in was a little tricky. And I certainly am not a pro yet, but I got it in pretty good. Was even able to get it out. Due to reading here, I was terrified of pulling on it without breaking the suction, but I don't think I've had that problem yet.
I did practice runs of emptying it at work and did ok there. So that was a plus.
Overall, I'm pretty proud of myself. I look forward to when it is as easy/simple/old hat as tampons were. But for now, I'm doing well.
Today was the first day of actual bleeding. It is happening right now as a matter of fact. At this very moment. I am in immense pain. Which is the only disappointment I'm having in regards to cups: I had finally broken down and bought one because my cramps were so bad last month I had considered a trip to the ER for a shot. And I heard so many of you say it helped your cramps. I decided I'd do whatever it took to make my cramps stop. Sadly, I don't seem to be one of the lucky ones who gets cramp-relief if they wear a cup.
I'm not going to give up on using them. I still like the idea and plus, I spent $41 to get them, so I don't want that money to go to waste. But it is a let down at the moment to be in excruciating pain just like always. *sigh*
The only thing interesting about my first time use: The first night I put the small in, I had had just a tiny, tiny bit of brown spotting. I put the cup in and felt kind bloated. After about an hour, I decided to take it out and try to reinsert. When I took it out, there was some watery blood in the cup and a glob of blood that came out after the cup came out. I thought perhaps I had jump-started my period with the suction from the cup. But I didn't bleed anymore until today. I wonder what that was all about. I'm not a virgin, so I don't think it was my hymen breaking. That was the only event of note in my start to using cups.
Thanks for listening. Thanks all of you for the comm. It definitely made this a better experience. Cuz let me tell ya, the instructions that come with a Ladycup are rather lame-o.
